Service Purchase Request Forms

To purchase credit for time worked as a call firefighter prior to becoming a contributing member of the System. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (5 year purchase limit)

To purchase credit for Active Duty service in the military (contributory service, counts toward vesting), or military service prior to membership (non-contributory, does not count toward vesting, 4 year purchase limit). For an overview of the requirements, click here.

To purchase credit for time worked for a municipality in Rhode Island that does not belong to the System. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (4 year purchase limit for State/Teachers; 5 year purchase limit for municipal employees)

For current Certified Nurse Teachers to purchase credit for time worked as a registered nurse in any setting. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire.

Used to verify and purchase time during which you were officially laid off from your position. Purchasable within 3 years of return from layoff. (1 year purchase limit)

Used to verify and purchase time during which you were on official leave from your position (such as medical, maternity, and sabbatical). Purchasable within 3 years of the conclusion of leave. Must have at least 1 year of service and must return immediately from leave for at least 1 year before applying to purchase. (4 year purchase limit) For more requirements, click here. To purchase credit for time worked as a teacher in a state other than Rhode Island. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (5 year purchase limit)

To purchase credit for time worked as a part-time teacher and were not eligible for membership in the System. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (5 year purchase limit)

To purchase credit for service time in the Peace Corps. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (4 year purchase limit, combined with Teacher Corps and VISTA)

Used to verify and purchase time worked for a participating employer, but did not make contributions to the retirement system. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (5 year purchase limit)

To purchase credit for time worked as a private school teacher within the State of Rhode Island. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (5 year purchase limit)

To purchase credit for time during which you worked and contributed, but later took a refund of your contributions to the retirement system. This type of purchase is also called a Restoration of Service Credit. Purchasable after 1 year of service and within the first 3 years of initial rehire. To purchase credit for time worked as a substitute teacher for public schools in Rhode Island. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (5 year purchase limit)

To purchase credit for time served in the Teacher Corps. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (4 year purchase limit, combined with Peace Corps and VISTA)

To purchase credit for time served as a Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA). Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. (4 year purchase limit, combined with Peace Corps and Teacher Corps)

To purchase credit for time spent in a vocational education program. Purchasable within the first 3 years of initial hire. State employees or teachers must currently be teaching the subject of the vocational education certification. (5 year purchase limit)

Used to confirm Workshare Participation when purchasing missed salary toward retirement.
